Our February weather is, as always, predictably unpredictable.Earlier this week, we had forty-mile- an-hour gusting winds, and nightime lows in the 20s. It was so cold I thought I saw two rabbits sharing a heating pad near the carrot bed. I battened down the hatches, or in this case, the garden beds, with agribond and we rode out the storm. All hands survived in the garden. Things are still growing, but very, very slowly. Yesterday it soared to 64 degrees. A few more days in the 60s should bring the garden out of suspended animation and back into the light of spring.
Aside from its random weather, February is known for its holidays. We just got through celebrating Valentine's Day. And yes, Presidents' day is coming up , but there are two more holidays looming on the near horizon. February 18th is the date celebrating the discovery of Pluto. The planet, not the cartoon dog, was discovered on February 18, 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh. It was a Wednesday, not a date night, and Clyde had nothing else going on until the weekend. The newly discovered planet was named after the Roman god of the underworld (sorry, again, not the dog). In 2006 Pluto was re-classified as a dwarf planet.which upset many on Earth, but probably no one on Pluto itself .
Unbelievably , there is another holiday on Saturday. February 18th is also the day the motorized vacuum cleaner was invented. It was the first cleaner to actually suck up the dirt. Earlier cleaners just pushed dirt to the side , or swept it under the rug. Kind of like what politicians do nowadays. See you at market Saturday. Allan
