The Garden of the Woods, which seems to get a few feet larger every season, is actually four gardens. We have two vegetable gardens, an herb garden and a flower garden.
My wife and I work at this together, as we have for many years. We do everything from choosing vegetable varieties from seed catalogues to planting, weeding, watering and harvesting. We're willing to try new things, but we always observe one rule. We never grow any fruit or vegetable that we won't eat ourselves. In other words, you'll probably never see any Caribbean amaranth in the garden. Working in the garden gives me a much-needed diversion from the cares of the world. All the stresses of the day melt away as soon as I walk into the garden.
We grow seasonal produce, flowers and herbs all year round. Growing the best seasonal produce possible using organic tecniques is something I'm passionate about. I take great satisfaction in growing, nurturing and sharing the bounty of the garden. The highlight of the week for me is selling what we've grown at the Matthews Community Farmers' Market. The appreciation, and positive feedback I get from the people I see at the market means everything to me.
