The calendar says it's late January, but it feels more like early March. Those occasional frosty nights have been more than  balanced by day time temps in the mid-sixties. We've had no - and I hesitate to use the word - snow, but we have had rain, rain rain. Rain that has gone away, and come back again many a day. Rain that has produced bog like conditions in areas around the garden, and has prevented  me from tilling any new beds in the near future.  They say every thing has a price and I guess that's the price of an early spring.
The good news is  that (A) I started a few new beds before  the monsoon season started and that (B) the existing beds are still doing fine. The new arugula and Tuscan kale beds are singing  and growing in the rain. My old guests, who have extended their stay in the garden include: radicchio, escarole, frisee, spinach, lettuces, broccoli, red mustard greens, Napa cabbage, red cabbage, radishes, green onions, carrots, turnips and kale.
One of my guilty winter pleasures is  perusing seed catalogues. I realize this may not sound as exciting as zip lining ,sky diving or kayaking, but it's fun to me. I enjoy seeing old favorites that I've grown in the past, and checking out the new things that are coming out. No, I won't be growing any kiwi or paw paws this year, but I  was tempted. Maybe next year . In the next few weeks, I'll be putting in more broccoli , carrots, lettuce and kale.
They're not flashy, but they're dependable. Its like  driving a Honda instead of a Porsche.  And you can depend on me to be at the Market Saturday. See you there, Allan
